The second checkerboard cake…

The first checkerboard cake turned out so good, that I made another one a day later for a BBQ we were having with friends.  Besides, I don’t really like lemon, and I wanted to try one with chocolate!  This time, instead of trying to fill the rings in the pan with the chocolate and vanilla cake, I decided to try putting the cake batter into large ziploc bags and piping it into the pan.  It worked sooooo much better, that I’ve done it that way ever since!

Here’s the batter in the pans as I first put them into the oven.

Making a checkerboard cake is a messy affair… I feel like I dirtied every utensil in the kitchen!

Here’s the cakes as they were coming out of the oven.

I frosted the cake with vanilla frosting and sprinkled it with mini chocolate chips.

Everyone was surprised when we cut it open, to see the checkerboard inside!

The checkerboard cake was quickly becoming one of my favorite cakes to make.  It’s not too hard, but it looks so cool.  It makes me appear more talented than I am!  😉
